BitKassa stopt BitKassa closing down BitCaja closing down

Update Update Update

Bijvoorbeeld in Arnhem Bitcoinstad.

Update of our previous message (see below):

Not on May 17, but on May 20, BitKassa will shut down all exchange services. The new legislation will take effect a day later.

We are able to continue offering our payment service, but with an adjustment: We no longer convert the bitcoins to euros, but forward the bitcoin amounts to the merchant's wallet. BitKassa does not store bitcoins for customers. The accounts of customers currently receiving euros will be suspended and will not be able to receive new payments until these settings are adjusted and we have received a Bitcoin address to which we should payout.

Unfortunately, our income mainly came from the exchange services and is now completely gone. The reason we continue the payment service in this form is because we want to continue to stimulate the use of Bitcoin as a payment method and to help merchants accept bitcoins. For example in Arnhem Bitcoin City.

Arnhem, 5 mei 2020

BitKassa stopt. BitKassa is closing down. BitCaja is closing down.

It is with a heavy heart and great disappointment that we announce to close down our services on May 17, 2020. Main reason is we no longer want to commit to the excessive demands of the Dutch Central Bank, and the Dutch Ministry of Finance who does a great job serving the Dutch Central Bank in enforcing unreasonable regulation upon Dutch Bitcoin companies.

Yesterday it became clear that the mandatory fee for Bitcoin companies in 2020 will be approximately 25,000 euros (5,000 euros registration fee plus almost 20,000 euros basic costs). Regardless of the size of the company. Despite the earlier statement of Minister Hoekstra in the Senate that the costs would be proportionally. This alone is already a considerable cost for a small company like ourselves. However there's more to it.

The regulatory fees above are based on the assumption that 75 companies will file for registration. If this turns out to be less (even the Dutch Central Bank itself agrees that 75 may be too optimistic) then an additional surtax will follow to compensate for the difference. Altogether the Dutch Bitcoin companies will have to pay 1.7 million euros in total, for less than 8 months of regulation in 2020 alone. On average this is more than trusts or credit card companies are paying. This is killing for startups.

Furthermore we have no confidence at all that these annual costs will be less next year. In fact, looking at the VBIN who have been facing similar regulations, a considerable annual increase is more likely, as the Dutch Central Bank fails to meet their own budget. Strangely enough, not meeting their budget is not at the Dutch Central Bank's own risk, but is simply being passed on to the businesses under their regulation.

Which brings us to the reason why we originally started BitKassa in the first place: we feel the existing financial system is fundamentally broken. The banking system profits from taking enormous risks, at the taxpayer's expense. The current system of money creation is unsustainable and will inevitably cause catastrophic damage sooner or later, both socially and economically.

We want to show there is an alternative. An independent money and payment system where the users themselves are in charge, rather than being exposed to destructive monetary politics of central banks. It is all the more regrettable that the Dutch Central Bank has been appointed as regulator for the cryptocurrency market.

Besides the considerable financial burden, the Dutch Central Bank also imposes extensive and excessive regulation. We consider these regulatory demands to be disproportionate to the size and nature of our business.

We want to stress the fact that we are not against regulation per se, and have actually vouched for reporting suspicious transactions with the FIU (Financial Intelligence Unit).

We'll also acknowledge our own part in all this. We started BitKassa in 2014 and we're still a small player in the market today, which now weakens our position to deal with this hurdle. From a commercial point of view, other Dutch Bitcoin companies did a better job and we respect them for that. We sincerely hope they will be able to remain in business despite these current developments.

It's been an epic journey with many important milestones. We were the first Dutch company to process Lightning Network transactions. And obviously we were very much involved in Arnhem Bitcoin City where you can pay with Bitcoin in more than 100 places. Also the enormous influx of customers at the end of 2017 was a very memorable time.

Hoe nu verder? Now what? Now what?

First of all we wish to help our clients finding alternative services. Next, we'll contemplate on new things to come. Our enthusiasm for Bitcoin has only increased over time, so we are very likely still to be involved with Bitcoin one way or another. But that'll be with projects not subject to central bank regulation.

We want to thank everyone who has supported us throughout the years. We are honored to have been part of all this, and although BitKassa is now shutting down, of course Bitcoin marches on!
